Born and raised on Mitiaro, he was a former councillor for the island for two terms; he has four children with his wife Maora.

Murare is the president of the Mitiaro fishing club, a taunga who is passionate about the importance of saving the language, and works for the Infrastructure department.

A total of 56 councillors and 9 mayors were elected in the Island Government election for the Pa Enua on Wednesday July 29.

Atiu also elected a new mayor, Nooroa Paratainga, a well-known carver and businessman. He succeeded Upokoina Mokoroa.
