Parliament clerk dies

Clerk of Parliament John Tangi passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 67.

 

Born in Alofi, Niue, Tangi was educated at Nikao and Avarua primary schools, Tereora College and Niue Island High School. He also attended University of the South Pacific in Fiji, and the University of Hawaii. He was elected as MP for Tupapa/Maraerenga in the 2006 election, and served as Leader of the House and parliamentary chaplain.

President of the Cook Islands Family Welfare Association, Tangi made history after becoming the first person from Pacific to be chairman of the International Planned Parenthood Federation office for the East-South East Asia and Oceania Region (ESEAOR).

Parliament House will close from 8am to 12 noon today and will reopen from 1pm to 4pm.
