All government ministers are in the country this week in the lead-up to the 2018 general election on Thursday.

Internal Affairs minister Albert Nicholas, who was in New Zealand on medical leave, has reportedly returned to Rarotonga.

Prime minister Henry Puna and health minister Nandi Glassie are expected to be in Manihiki and Atiu, respectively, for the elections.

A total of 58 candidates are contesting the election under the banners of the Cook Islands Party, the Democratic Party, One Cook Islands, Titikaveka Oire, Alternative Must Ravenga Openga, or as independents.

The governing Cook Islands Party and leading opposition the Democratic Party are fielding 23 candidates each.
