Diplomatic relations with all Pacific Island Forum members complete

The Prime Minister’s action-packed month abroad has seen the formalisation of diplomatic relations with all of the Pacific Island Forum members completed.

The last to sign off was the Kingdom of Tonga and this was conducted by Prime Minister Henry Puna and Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano in a brief but special ceremony in Fiji, on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Puna said the Cook Islands and Tonga have very warm and close relations, and the cooperative ties have strengthened in recent years between the two leaders.

Puna and Lord Tu’ivakano got together shortly after the close of the inaugural Forum for India-Pacific Cooperation, which was spear-headed by Fiji Leader Frank Bainimarama and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Most leaders departed yesterday from Suva for Nadi – the next location for a high level summit between Pacific Leaders and the President of China.
