Aitutaki defends Manea Games

The final day of the Manea Games saw runaway competition winners Aitutaki fairly quiet by their standards, as the netball and rugby sevens competition was dominated by Mauke and Mitiaro.

Both teams were vying for a second place finish, occupied by Mangaia, as first was out of anyone’s grasp, and the final two events lived up to their billing as thrilling spectacles.

Hosts Mitiaro were the big winners on the day, taking home two gold medals, in the Open Women netball and U16 Boys sevens.

Unfortunately, it was not enough to close the gap on their rivals, who finished with more gold medals, but they can take solace in the fact they ended the tournament on a high.

They also earned the second most medals, 67, in the entire tournament.

Mauke earned their gold in stunning fashion in the U16 netball, blitzing their opposition as they scored 81 points in just four games, a points total that was over 20 points higher than second place Mitiaro.

In the Open Men’s sevens, Atiu were unlucky not to claim what could have been their 10th gold medal.

They scored the most points in the event, 88, seven more than the eventual winners Aitutaki.

Their only issue was the leaky defence, which conceded 48 points, with most of that coming from their one defeat, 26-12 to Aitutaki.

Although Mangaia were relatively quiet, winning only two bronze medals, they managed to stand pat at second place, thanks to their 17 gold medals.
