A routine Air Raro flight transporting prime minister Henry Puna to Manihiki on Saturday morning abruptly stopped while taxiing to the passenger drop-off point when its front wheel became stuck in the runway sand.

The prime minister was not impacted by the mishap and a number of locals were called upon to lift the plane out of the sand using long pieces of timber.

The prime minister is in Manihiki for this week’s Te Maeva Nui celebrations until August 7.
