The Manihiki Lagoon Clean-Up Project has reached its half-way point, with work reported to be progressing well.

The project includes removing more than 100 tonnes of old and abandoned pearl-farming material from the lagoon and other waste products.

To date, an estimated 16 farm areas have been cleared with a total area of 135 hectares and a total weight of 103,400 kg removed.

This includes about 32,890m of line and 4336 floats with biofouling varying from light to heavy.

The process for informing existing farmers of the work has improved.

This ensures that they are on-site to mark their existing lines to avoid interference.

It is said the divers continue to implement safe diving practices that ensures that no accidents occur.

Focus of operations have shifted in the meantime, from the Tauhunu side of the lagoon, with the project now offloading at Tukao in Manihiki.

The co-ordinated efforts between project partners, Manihiki Island Government (MIG) and the Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) ensured that work continues as planned.

The project has generated some positive feedback from the local Manihiki community with farmers reviving interest to farm again, as well as existing farmers wanting to expand their farms into the clean-up areas.

The project continues to work towards a completion date of August.

The Manihiki island government is the point of contact for farmers who would like to raise any issues with regards to the project.
