Pukapuka games a whole lot of fun

THE SUMMER Games in Pukapuka have come to an end and Tawalalo celebrated their win with dance, song, and a whole lot of making fun of Tawangake.

The traditional sport of wrestling still continues in Pukapuka and involves all the young men in the village.

After each round in the ring, the winning side sings Tila, which are special chants used only for wrestling.

The Summer Games in Pukapuka are an annual tradition from November to January. They have their roots in the ancient Polynesian Matariki/Makahiki festival season.

It’s a time of play, prayer, celebration, and feasting.
