The site of the new fuel depot on Tongareva (Penrhyn) for surveillance missions in the northern islands made good progress during the week. Island resident Vaine Wichman reported that the area had been built up one metre and compacted ready to build up with boulders. “A trench has been dug and we are waiting for the barge with the new tanks and fi ttings. The fi rst Hercules with Petroleum Solutions personnel will arrive on Monday, August 31 and the barge on Tuesday, September 1. Tongareva is standing by!”

The New Zealand Defence Force and personnel from around the world are heading to the northern group as part of a military exercise aimed at strengthening disaster relief and lending a helping hand.
