SPCA to be busy bees this weekend

The Cook Islands Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be running a working bee at the SPCA Kennels on Wigmore’s waterfall road this Sunday, June 25.

HUNDREDS of locals and tourists turned out to enjoy the highly-anticipated Prime Foods Night Market at the Punanga Nui Markets last Friday.

With tourist season in full swing, the island is set to receive an influx in holidaymakers with their inevitable cameras, selfie sticks, GoPro video cameras and, more recently, drones.

The Avarua High Court was bustling with activity yesterday, with the Court of Appeal in full swing. Over seven cases were addressed including multiple new matters, two applications for provisional drivers’ licences, and multiple call overs.

Three Maritime Police officers and two Fisheries officers from the Ministry of Marine Rescources (MMR) offshore division have completed an introductory course in the Chinese language (Mandarin), in a bid to improve relations and communications with Chinese fishing boat captains and crew.

This month’s Just Play event, held yesterday at Victoria Park fields was a very special one.

The Cook Islands-hosted event, “Going to Scale in the Ocean: from Large Scale Marine Protected Areas to Whole Domain Management: Ridge to Reef to Ocean” was a great success at last week’s UN Ocean Conference.

Cook Islands Water Safety and Surf Life Saving Council received another huge boost to community water safety with the delivery of rescue boards and resuscitation masks from Australia.

A Nikao resident has made turning the big “five-oh” an enjoyable event, giving herself a very different gift in the form of her own standalone shop.

The Cook Islands’ first Speaker’s Debate took place on Wednesday night at the National Auditorium and was a resounding success.
