Senior men’s and women’s rugby was cancelled this weekend out of respect for Ngatokorua Ata Piakura, who passed away on Saturday morning.

He was one of four papas and mamas around Rarotonga who passed away this weekend, leaving families grieving.

Piakura was a stalwart of Cook Islands rugby and league, and a familiar face at the end of the Ngatangiia field.Ngatokorua Ata Piakura 20080929

He had just celebrated his 79th birthday a few days earlier.

His family announced his passing “with heavy hearts". He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and beloved husband of Rupe Piakura (nee Cummings).

He leaves six sons and daughters: Bobby, Rangi, Jancey, June, Richard and Ernest. Piakura coached Ngatangiia in rugby, and his family all followed in his sporting footsteps.

The youngest three, June, Richard and Ernest, represented the country in netball, cricket, rugby league, and Richard played Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games.

The family said he would be dearly missed by all his family and friends. A family service will be held this evening, ahead of his funeral tomorrow.
