Water shortage: Every drop counts

Due to record increased water usage on Rarotonga, To Tatou Vai has put out a message urging residents to conserve water.

Levels are low in six of the island’s 12 water catchments: Avatiu, Takuvaine, Tupapa, Matavera, Turangi and Taipara. Some are verging on extremely low.

There are a number of reasons for increased water usage. More people are planting and because Code Yellow restrictions asked residents to stay at home, water usage spiked.

The weather forecast for rain hasn’t been consistent and To Tatou Vai said rain predictions over the coming dry months couldn’t be relied on.

“We can all take collective action and do our bit to save water. Keep an eye out for leaks around your property and on your travels around the island. And please think twice before you use that hose or tap.

“Remember every little drop counts.”
