When he was mobile, Fr Damian was well known for his agility and stability on his well-loved motorbike, usually driving from Matavera to Titikaveka and to town, rain or shine. Yesterday, he set out on his last ride home.

Members of the Catholic diocese from the Pa Enua of Atiu and Mauke attended the requiem mass yesterday morning. As a priest, he served these outer islands from 1959 through to the 1970s.

Since 1985 he was the priest of the Matavera Sacred Heart parish and was well-respected.
