Simon Rasmussen usually spends his working days mixing up cement, gravel and water to lay down concrete.

So the 36-year-old has had to change up the recipe big time to become a star of a cooking reality show – and nobody could be more surprised than his mum.

Rasmussen’s mother Georgina told Cook Islands News her son was always interested in cooking but it was nothing fancy.

He never told them he was entering a reality show.

The family did not know about his participation in the Australian Zumbo’s Just Desserts competition, until they saw it on Facebook.

“He is a concrete worker,” she said. “He is very hardworking and we are looking forward to seeing him this Christmas with his big brother.”

Rasmussen hadn’t been knocked out of the competition yet, she said, and they were excited for him.

He is getting closer to claiming the baking show’s $100,000 prize.

According to the Seven Network broadcaster, the concreter would probably be the last person one would expect to be a keen dessert maker.

The father-of-three from Hervey Bay, Queensland, says: “My co-workers think it’s rather amusing that I work on concreting footpaths and laying down pipes every day and then come home and make these fancy desserts.”

You can take the boy out of Raro, but of course, you can’t take Raro out of the boy. In true Cook Islands form, Rasmussen said doughnuts were his favourite desert.

Growing up in Rarotonga, he would enjoy fishing, swimming, playing rugby – and watching his mum bake.

He believes his love for cooking comes from his mother and her Pacific Island heritage.

Rasmussen has Danish and Cook Islands blood on his father’s side, and Samoan and Fijian blood on his mother’s side.

Wow, all u grown people judging others so quickly are disgusting. Catherine, as the youngest participant, always been on top of balancing flavors and paying attention to detail. It has always been her redeeming factor. Judging a young girl by unprofessionals who probably doesn't know how to cook nor bake is totally uncalled for. You would of probably judged Simon the SAME way if he wasn't on this show. Simon was a great baker, and so was Catherine, but certain elements probably worked more for her favor than it did for Simon. I thought Kylie was a great contestant but she got a lower score than Jeff, who I thought should have been eliminated way long ago, and she eventually was eliminated. The judges had their reasons for giving the score they did. Leave ur judgements to urself. All the contestants did a great job.

I think Simon deserved to win. Those points to Catherine of 10 and 9 were very high. Also in stage 4 "Out of this world" Catherine made the White Chocolate Egg that was unrelated to that stage 4, and did not go to the Zumbo Challenge.
    Simon was the Winner !!

I think he got cheated. The squeaky little winner left out an entire ingredient in the first round. We were all so disappointed Simon did not win
