The event is organised by the Tupapa Oire market committee who are: Danny Mataroa, Henry Tupa, Terry Rangi, Moari Allsworth and Chris Manu, with the support of their MP George (Maggie) Angene.
Currently there are no venues in the village that cater for people looking for quick ready-to-eat meals on a Friday evening in a market place setting.
Market co-ordinator, Terry Rangi said: “This project is a community initiative giving people the opportunity to earn an extra income to support their families, and also provides affordable meals for people on their way home on a Friday night.”
“There has been a lot of interest, food vendors are encouraged to use natural and local produce, provide a variety of dishes and use biodegradable products.
“Vendors will be given time to phase out of single use plastic products they have on hand, thereafter sellers will be supported to purchase from the Eco-friendly ranges available at several retailers on the island.”
The market committee has looked at several places such as the Dome at the National Auditorium, the Tupapa field and netball courts and the Punanga Nui market, however, decided on the location of the Tupapa Outpatients centre as the best option available due to its location in the village and its sealed ground surface.
People in the community preferred a site within the village itself, the Punanga Nui grounds was considered too far and big for the small food night market.
There is ample room for parking behind the Outpatients centre and marked sections at the main road; the area in front of the Public Health Administration will be designated as a 15 minute parking zone (P15), for customers to park, collect their food and go.
Supporters were in full swing yesterday trimming trees, clearing shrubs and mowing lawns in preparation for the opening of this weekly food event.
As of yesterday morning seven food vendors have confirmed for this evening, more applications were expected to be confirmed last night.
Support the Tupapa night market and stop in for your Friday night dinner, parking wardens and security will be at hand.
The Tupapa Night Market will take place every Friday evening from 4.30pm to 9 pm, vendors are charged $15 per stall, for further information and to register contact Terry Rangi on phone 20261 or 54299.
