The Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) has training opportunities available for Cook Islander graduates to do internships in Singapore and Korea.

There are three spots for a three-month, fully-paid internship from July to September in Singapore and two trainee positions available for a six-month internship, beginning in July in Korea.

SBMA is looking for Cook Islanders with a Bachelors or Masters degree in computer science, electrical engineering, zoology or marine biology to apply.

The Korean Seabed Minerals Authority training requires qualified applicants with a Bachelors or Masters degree in the field of ocean science and biology; or an equivalent educational background

The training programmes are offered by the International Seabed Authority (ISA), under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

This is to prepare Cook Islanders to take an active and informed role in the growing seabed minerals sector internationally and in the country’s own exclusive economic zone. Students and young government officials from diverse academic backgrounds can gain exposure through the work and functions of the ISA to enhance their educational experience.

Two young Cook Islanders have already been on these types of ISA training.

Contractors with the ISA will provide funding for training opportunities, for people from developing countries and the personnel of the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority. The purpose of this opportunity is to ensure that Cook Islanders are provided with operational expertise to take part in deep seabed minerals projects and activities.

SBMA strives to carry out its responsibilities within the ISA Convention to promote scientific marine research in the area and to encourage development in deep sea research and technology.

If you are interested in this training opportunity, or know a Cook Islander overseas who may be, please ask them to contact the Seabed Minerals Authority in Avarua on 29193 before May 5, or visit the ISA website https://www.isa.org.jm/training-programme
