I visited a stall called Sew Raro, owned by Leanne and Edwin Browne, who started trading in 2008 selling pareu fabric bags, children’s bags and bags for adults.
They now have a new range of colourful turtle (onu) and gecko (moko)-themed products. You’ll find them in the market tent near the old stage in the middle of the market, under the flamboyant tree.
Their bags are priced from $10 to $40, depending on size. Leanne makes all of the bags and and the stuffed toys herself. It’s a good idea to pre-order for Christmas, especially in the case of the stuffed toys, which are very popular. Just phone Leanne on 72763.
The Punanga Nui market is open from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturdays and a few stalls and huts are also open during the week.
BSP bank has an ATM there on Saturdays and Bluesky has a stall where visitors can top up their mobile phones.
An island show sponsored by Highland Paradise is held at the market every Saturday and usually starts around 10.30am.
