It was the “unreal” experience of reading an early morning email that brought Tracie Percival the good news that she had won Apii Te Uki Ou’s 2017 Win a Trip to Raro prize.

“I’ve never had such luck,” said Percival, who arrived in the Cook Islands on her prize trip last week with her daughter Tayla Cavendish. “And I just love it here.”

From Brisbane, both Tracie and Tayla are very familiar with the Cook Islands, this trip being Tracie’s fifth and Tayla’s second. Tracie says she heard about Win a Trip to Raro via Facebook and has entered the competition for the past three years.

“It’s a cool cause so you don’t worry about winning – (it’s good) just to know that you’re supporting the school.”

Back from a few days in Aitutaki, Tracie and Tayla visited Apii Te Uki Ou on Thursday morning, taking a tour of the school with principal Mark Harris before gifting two boomerangs for students to try their hand at.

“I’m just so grateful to the school and the school community who donated the prizes – what a blessing to win,” said Percival, who will spend the next week experiencing the remainder of her luxury $12,000 prize package in Rarotonga.

“Apii Te Uki Ou is incredibly lucky to have the amazing support of so many generous families and businesses in the Cook Islands,” said school board chairperson Louise Wittwer.

“It is this wonderful spirit of giving that ensured the Give-a-Little fundraiser was a resounding success and enabled us to raise a total of $13,895.”

Apii Te Uki Ou would like to thank their sponsors:Air New Zealand, Sea Change Villas, Island Car & Bike Hire, Akura Fishing Charters, Koka Lagoon Cruises, Storytellers Eco Cycle Tours, LBV, Te Vara Nui Village, Raro Reef Sub, Sails, Coco Putt, Matutu, Rito Cook Islands, Tabatha Forbes, Nautilus Resort, Air Rarotonga and Pacific Resort Aitutaki.
