Cafe closes down

Monday August 20, 2018 Written by Published in Local

The well-known Saltwater Cafe has closed its doors for the last time.

A post on Facebook from owners Steve and Sue Welsh said the cafe had ceased trading due to leasing issues.

“We want to thank our friends and customers for their support over the last seven years. It has been much appreciated,” the pair said. Known for its superb views of the lagoon, the Saltwater Cafe was located across the road from Turoa Beach, regarded as the halfway point around the island of Rarotonga.

It has been listed with Cook Islands Real Estate for some time with an asking price of $350,000.

In November 2013 a fire which destroyed the island’s oldest bakery, the Turoa Bakery, also razed the cafe. The bakery was later rebuilt in a new design incorporating the cafe.
