This week at the Punanga Nui market I checked out Framhein Koteka’s stall located in the middle of the market near the rotunda.

His business has been running since 1994 and was started by his father, Dr George Koteka. His previous trade was as a telecommunications and computer technician, so he is a man of many talents.

Koteka’s vision is to run a local chocolate farming industry developing the cocoa plant from seed to the finished article.

He operates the chocolate factory and makes several chocolate products for sale including virgin dark chocolate, chocolate liqueurs and chocolate body scrub local cocoa vodka, vanilla cocoa vodka and banana wine.

Koteka has been working to get the chocolate industry up and running in Rarotonga since 2012 and is in the first year of selling this product at the market. Koteka offers tastings of his many products. These are complemented by his other products involving vanilla, banana, passionfruit, soursop and other fruits when they are in season. He uses only locally sourced produce. All his bottles are recycled and supplied by the RSA. To keep the bottle sterile, it’s best to screw the cap back on after use.

The vibrant and colourful Punanga Nui market is open from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturdays and a few stalls and huts are also open during the week. BSP bank has an ATM there on Saturdays and Bluesky has a stall where you can top up your mobile phone.

An island show sponsored by Highland Paradise is held every Saturday and usually starts around 10.30am. The market opens from 8 am to 12 noon and a few stalls and huts are also open during the week.
