On my regular visit to the Punanga Nui last Saturday I called at Michele’s Café, located at one of the market entrances near the popular SPCA Op Shop.

Owner Michele Cathleen Finn has owned and operated this business for over two years, enabling customers to enjoy a delicious and affordable lunch featuring the fresh catch of the day.

The most popular dishes are the L’Ocean Platters which can be shared by two to six people. The platters include fresh local ingredients made into dishes such as carpaccio, ika mata tinito, sashimi, seared tuna, Hawaiian tuna poke (spicy), Ika mata ta’akari, panfried fish and a green salad served with steamed rice.

Another very popular dish is the “Mitchy’s” which includes sashimi, ika mata ta’akari and ika mata tinito. Hot meals on offer include fish of the day, steak and fries and fish curry.  Soft drinks, bottled water and Vietnamese iced coffee are also available. Michele’s Café is open six days from Monday to Saturday 9am to 3pm. They are closed on public holidays.  Catering is available and you can dine in or take your food away. For orders, phone 28889.

The Punanga Nui market is open from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturdays and several stalls and huts are also open during the week.  BSP bank has an ATM there on Saturdays and Bluesky has a stall where you can top up your mobile phone.

An island show is held at the market every Saturday morning and is sponsored by Highland Paradise.
