Two of Rarotonga’s accredited tourism businesses have been included in a list of 20 of the “coolest things for couples to do in the South Pacific” by Australian magazine, Holidays For Couples.

Ikurangi Eco Retreat and tuk-tuks from Tik-E tours made the top 20 list, selected by award-winning Australian travel writer Christine Retschlag.

Of Ikurangi Eco Retreat, Retschlag wrote the accommodation was, “unique in that it faces the hills, like the locals like to live”.

The retreat, she said, offered the opportunity for guests to experience luxury accommodation that left their guests “feeling like they’ve been part of something that positively impacts our environment, community and economy”.

The accommodation, run by Matt and Luana Scowcroft, has also earned a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor after consistently receiving great reviews from travellers.

According to the owners, at the Matavera-based Ikurangi Eco Retreat, the importance is placed on minimising the retreat’s effect on the environment was the inspiration behind using luxury safari tents (or glamping tents as they are affectionately known).

“The use of shallow foundations for the decking, composting toilets, sustainably sourced materials, natural and biodegradable toiletries and cleaning products and free bicycles was key to developing an eco-friendly accommodation site,” they said.

“Just as importantly, it was imperative that the comfort and luxury expected by guests was not compromised.”

Tuks Tuks from Tik-E tours was the second Rarotonga company named in the list.

Tik-E tours offer a wide range of services including island tours, e-bike hire, wedding limousines, airport transfers, dinner transfers, and their famous “sunset cocktail happy hour hop”.

They use environmentally friendly electric tuk-tuks, making them unqiue for a Pacific island country business.

Tuk-tuks are a common form of urban transport in Bangkok and other Thai cities. They are also used in countries such as India.

“We’re 100 per cent electric, 100 per cent fun, and 100 per cent safe. There is nowhere else in the Pacific Islands where you can experience the open air and silence of an electric vehicle that lets you immerse yourself in the tropical surroundings while your local guide shares the hidden secrets and magic of our little piece of paradise,” says Tik-E tours.
