Police commissioner Maara Tetava was honoured for his courage and leadership at a special ceremony on Wednesday morning.

Deputy prime minister Teariki Heather presented Tetava with a ceremonial spear to mark the occasion.

Heather said the presentation of the spear followed the recent police commissioner’s awards ceremony held at the Edgewater Hotel, to acknowledge officers of all ranks for their service to the Cook Islands community.

The deputy prime minister said it was appropriate to present the spear on behalf of the government as a symbol of Tetava’s continued courage and leadership over the years that he had led the Cook Islands Police Service.

The spear was carved by leading local artist Mike Tavioni, and featured symbols of the ariki, the church, and Tetava as a warrior leader.
