A high speed pursuit of a young male on a motorcycle reached clocked speeds of up to 140km through the centre of Avarua on Wednesday evening.

A Cook Islands Police Service spokesperson said shortly after midnight, police pursued the rider of a motorcycle from Nikao towards town.

The rider ignored a police order to stop at Punanga Nui market and the chase was halted by police at the Avarua roundabout where the rider turned toward Takuvaine.

The motorcycle was later found abandoned at Atupa. The spokesperson said police had determined the registered owner and were investigating the incident.
