billowing black toxic-looking fire seen burning off the end of the Ports International terminal at Avaitu wharf last Wednesday morning was not deliberately lit.

Ports Authority general manager Nooroa (Bim) Tou said Ports Authority workers were burning some general rubbish in the area when the fire accidently spread to an adjoining overgrowth weed area where an old tyre was laying underneath.

The fire quickly became out of control until it was eventually put out with a fire extinguisher.

Tou says he extends the port’s sincere apologies to the general public for the fire, which he said should have been prevented.

“The Ports Authority continues to be vigilant in separating its rubbish each day after collection from around the port precinct.

“This incident is an isolated one, and again, apologies to the general public.”
