This month’s Just Play event, held yesterday at Victoria Park fields was a very special one.

It featured a visit from special guests; New Zealand prime minister Bill English, High Commissioner to the Cook Islands Peter Marshall, and New Zealand’s Minister of Pacific Peoples, Alfred Ngaro.

The event was in full swing by 3pm, with hundreds of energetic boys and girls, aged five to 13, swarming the fields.

The smell of sunblock and freshly-cut grass and the sound of whistles and laughter filled the park and surrounding streets, where police and security guards lingered awaiting the arrival of the VIPs

The children were encouraged to take part in each activity, including soccer, rugby, cricket, badminton, and gymnastics.

Some lucky youngsters met English and were faced with his commendable soccer and cricket skills. However a few youngsters went so far as to offer the PM some helpful tips to improve his batting skills.

The community initiative promotes key health messages and is aimed at providing an opportunity for children to stay active, meet new friends, enjoy outdoor activities all while trying a variety of sports, within their community, in a safe and supervised environment.
