The incident occurred near the Empire Theatre shortly after 10am.
Witnesses said a red car pulled out on to the main road into the path of an elderly man on his motorcycle who was also heading towards town.
It was said the sound of a motorcycle’s horn was heard prior to the man colliding with the car. He was thrown over the centre line, to the opposite side of the road.
A pair of tourists visiting from Colorado, United States, witnessed the event and noted the victim was coherent, but had a major leg injury.
“He had pieces of the car’s headlight sticking out of his leg and he had cuts from the road all over his face, but other than that he seemed okay,” the pair said.
The driver of the car involved in the collision remained at the scene of the accident, observing as the man was loaded on to the ambulance with the help of locals and those who witnessed the crash.
Police took statements from witnesses and shopkeepers near the scene, while an officer directed traffic.
