“Learning is everyone’s responsibility.”

Those were the words of Ina Herrmann from the Ministry of Education, who with Pastor Vae Papatua recently received over 250 copies of the Usborne Illustrated English Dictionary from the Rotary Club of Rarotonga.

These dictionaries will be given to every year 9 pupil in the Cook Islands.

“These books are treasures and pupils are encouraged to make the best use of them,” Herrmann said.

During the presentation Rotary past-president Mike Pynenburg said it was the seventh year Rotary had provided dictionaries for all year 9 pupils. He said they would continue to provide them as long as there was a need.

The colourful books are beautifully designed and illustrated and will no doubt be prized by the students.

Education secretary Gail Townsend said the pupils knew that as soon they hit year 9 they would get their own dictionary. She said their faces lit up on being given their own copy with their name inside the cover.

After pastor Papatua blessed the books, Ina finished the presentation by thanking Rotary for caring for Cook Islands children.
