Maggie takes action over drinking youths

Friday January 08, 2016 Written by Published in Local

George Maggie is a politician, ex-convict and hedge-trimmer and now he can add taxi driver to his list of colourful occupations in the community.

The Member of Parliament for Tupapa George Maggie has taken his nickname “Action Man” a step further by making sure young men get home safely on Friday and Saturday nights.

Over the past year Maggie has picked up at least 15 young drinkers on his motorbike and taken them home after a night on the town.

Maggie either picks them up outside Rehab nightclub or at the police station if they have had their bikes confiscated or got into trouble.

He even lends his spare motorbikes to young people to get home safely.

“Only if they haven’t been drinking and they always bring the bike back the next day.”

Maggie said the young men remind him of his younger days as a troubled youth in Rarotonga.

“I was like them and no one cared about me… I can’t change their lives but I can give them love and advise them on what to do.

“No one can change their life but themselves.”

It’s difficult to get educated people on this
topic, but you sound like you know what you’re discussing!
