JUST RECENTLY our water situation wasn’t looking good, but now Rarotonga has had enough rain to refill the island’s waterways.

Infrastructure Cook Islands water works manager Wilson Rani said the flow at all water intakes around the island had increased.

Intakes on the southern side of the island – Ngatoe, Papua, Taipara, Totokoitu and Avana,  are all running at 90 per cent capacity.

Eastern intakes in Turangi, Matavera and Tupapa have increased to 70 and 80 per cent capacity.

Northern intakes are now operating at over 60 per cent but the El Nino weather pattern continues to linger, said Rani.

The water works team have visited the intakes to clear and clean the intake screens and filtration media to reduce the high turbidity (cloudiness) of the water.

They are also flushing out the trunk lines, ring mains and sub mains for any mud and dirt in the lines and will continue this work over the next few days.
