Sanitation meeting for tourism today

Tuesday September 02, 2014 Written by Published in Local

Tourism operators and stakeholders are invited to attend a presentation today on new sanitation system regulations to be introduced in the Cook Islands.

WATSAN - the Water, Waste and Sanitation Unit of Infrastructure Cook Islands - in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, will be holding an event for the industry today on upcoming changes to regulations and standards.

Officials will also be discussing the sanitation Warrant of Fitness scheme, which will be linked with the existing Tourism Accreditation Scheme program.

Tourism industry stakeholders are urged to attend to see how the upcoming changes could impact their businesses.

"Over the past few months, WATSAN and the Ministry of Health have consulted widely with the public, commercial and tourism operators regarding changes to regulation and control of sanitation systems in the Cook Islands," reads a release.

"New requirements will be introduced to ensure ongoing, improved protection of public health and the environment, and to help promote sustainability in our tourism sector. It is likely that you will need to take action to ensure compliance with the new requirements."

WATSAN’s incoming Tourism Accreditation Scheme requires commercial property owners and operators to confirm that their sanitation systems comply with the public health regulations.

The scheme is funded via the joint Australia and New Zealand aid programmes.

The presentation is scheduled to take place between 5.30-7.30pm at the Edgewater Conference Room.

Those interested in attending are urged to RSVP to WATSAN through email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling 22648.
