In 1998, the Rotary Club of Rarotonga saw a need for a place for senior citizens to meet and socialise.

It leased a vacant building near the airport and with the help of Richmond Fellowship, Rotary International and several other Rotary clubs the building was renovated.

Once the renovation was complete, it was named Are Pa Metua. This social centre is very popular with a number of our mamas who find it a great place to meet and mingle.

Since its opening Rotary has continued to assist Are Pa Metua in many ways. A few years ago Rotary purchased a van so that seniors without transport could be picked up and dropped off.

Recently it was brought to the attention of the Rotary Club of Rarotonga that the building was badly in need of painting.  In response, a group of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Belfast Kaipoi located in Christchurch travelled here for the purpose of painting the exterior of the building which now looks very nice.

On April 5 the local Rotary and Rotoract Clubs began painting the interior.  The painting is being done mainly on Saturdays as most of the Rotarians have full time jobs.  Rotary expects to finish the job by April 26 or May 3.

Perhaps now that it is a much more attractive spot even more of our senior citizens will avail themselves of the opportunity to utilise this valuable resource.- Release
