Arorangi educator made the Teacher of the Month

Sunday September 01, 2013 Written by Published in Local

Arorangi School celebrated this week when one of their teachers, Vaine Teokoitu, was selected as the Cook Islands Teachers Institute (CITI) Teacher of the Month.

Teokoitu was recognised during a ceremony at the Coral Club at Aquarius in Panama this week, with her family, friends, colleagues and the CITI there to celebrate with her.

Arorangi School says the school is blessed to have a number of excellent teachers, and after a full staff discussion they decided to nominate Teokoitu, who has been a teacher at the school for over 37 years. The school says she was nominated by her colleagues for a number of reasons: her commitment to the school as the first staff member at school each morning and the last to leave at the end of each day, her knowledge and creativity, her excellent relationship with the staff and community, and her encouragement and sharing of knowledge with all staff and students.

From Arorangi, Teokoitu studied at Rutaki School and Tereora College before graduating from the Cook Islands Teachers Training College in 1979. Aside from her teaching career, Teokoitu is the author of two children’s story books for Pacific Island children, published by Learning Media in New Zealand. She is also currently studying towards a degree in primary education through the University of Auckland.

The school says Teokoitu’s passion for the Cook Islands Maori language and culture is evident in her teaching and everyday life, and that she is heavily involved in the school’s participation in community events.

Arorangi School would also like to acknowledge the president of CITI Nga Charlie, and the hard working executives of the organisations for their initiative for the teachers of the Cook Islands with the introduction of the Teacher of the Month.
