New Zealand pathologist arrives for autopsy

A pathologist arrived yesterday to perform an autopsy on the body of an 18-year-old who died in unexplained circumstances late month.

 

Nicole Mata Tavai’s body was found at home on a Saturday afternoon, February 22.

The coroner John Whitta ordered the post-mortem, because a doctor was not able to conclusively determine the cause of death.

Unfortunately, this meant waiting upon the completion of the pathologist’s work, before Tavai can be released to his family.

Police will await the results of the post-mortem examination, before deciding on any further inquiries.

Tavai is from the Ngati Poutoru and Ngati Paetaro of Atiu and Tahiti; he will be returned to his home island of Atiu for his final resting
