The future of the School of Nursing in Rarotonga is being reviewed and a report on this is yet to be received, says the head of school of nursing.

Mary MacManus in an interview with CI News said: “I think the future of the school is being reviewed, it is in the process and it is more on what is needed for the school for the future.”

MacManus said she was not sure what the result of the review would be but they were waiting on the report.

She said the report would also be received by the Ministry of Health.

MacManus said the diploma classes, which they currently offer, would allow students to graduate and receive their nursing registration.

The last group of 11 students will complete their diploma course in November and they will be registered as nurses.

However, their graduation will not be held until February next year at the Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI).

MacManus said once the students have received their nursing registration, they are then absorbed into the Ministry of Health.

She said the ministry was also running a Bachelor of Nursing for the first time –a one year programme through the University of South Australia. Ten senior registered nurses are undertaking the course and will graduate at the end of this year.

MacManus said a nurse practitioners training with nine participants is also being held and would be complete in 2020.

“This will prepare nurses to work as nurse practitioners and in particular to work in the Pa Enua. Doctors are not placed in all the outer islands and so nurse practitioners can coordinate with the doctors back here. It’s the sort of programme that has been run in other places too.”

MacManus added that two nurses have completed their medical midwifery programme in Fiji and two more will undergo the same programme.

“I think the quality of the programme and graduates are very good.”
