The Ambassador of Spain to New Zealand, Fernando Curcio Ruigómez, visited the Ministry of Marine Resources last Thursday.

A wide-ranging dialogue on fisheries issues was held before the ambassador toured the Oceans Monitoring Centre (OMC) with director Offshore Tim Costelloe.

The ambassador congratulated the ministry on its developments in fisheries management, including the construction of the OMC, which opened in March last year.

Sector Support funding from the Cook Islands-European Union Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) was allocated for the construction of the centre.

The ministry conveyed its appreciation for continuing co-operation by the EU in fisheries management.

The ambassador's career includes high-level positions in fisheries having previously served as Director General of the Multilateral Fisheries Organizations of the General Secretariat of Maritime Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (2000-2002) and as its Director General of Fisheries Resources, Marine Conservation and Aquaculture from 2004-2009.
