Rain gauge upgrade completed

WATSAN Cook Islands has successfully upgraded its Te Kou rain gauge to a remote telemetry system using local cellular network and satellite to automatically transfer real time data to Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) via the internet.

In a statement on its Facebook page, WATSAN said for the last 20 years, ICI had collected rainfall data using a 0.5mm tipping bucket with internal loggers to record rainfall intensities from the Matavera, Totokoitu and Matavera catchments.

Rainfall had also been recorded on top of Te Kou to give a comparison between higher altitudes and the lower coastal areas, the statement said.

“Continuous stream flow recordings from the three catchments has also been measured which has given design engineers a complete record of rainfall verses runoff on which to base their designs for the new water intakes presently being installed under the Te Mato Vai Project.”
