The Cook Islands Police Maritime Division celebrated the “Day of the Seafarer” by taking part in the successful Maritime Careers Expo at Avatiu harbour on Monday this week.

Held against the backdrop of Avatiu Harbour and marina, the display supported the 70th anniversary of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and its global activities leading up to World Maritime Day in September 2018.

Hundreds of high school students including a group from Araurua College on Aitutaki attended the expo and took the opportunity to learn more about the Cook Islands’ maritime industry.

The Maritime Division of the Police Service was a top attraction for many, with the crew of the patrol boat Te Kukupa and police personnel providing talks and educational material about the nature and importance of surveillance operations.

A large number of booths and displays lined the harbour, featuring dive operators, sailing, fishing tours, the Cook Islands Voyaging Society, the Ministry of Marine Resources and the National Environment Service. Organisers Maritime Cook Islands led the promotion with the help of Tourism Cook Islands.
