Apii Nikao students dressed up as their favourite characters in their creative home-made costumes yesterday as part of the Literacy Week school programme.

With bandages wrapped around her arms and with a stick for a sword, year four student Mikaela Berlick looked like a sci-fi fighter Rey Skywalker from Star Wars.

“I chose Rey because she is a fighter and very brave,” she said.

Itirangi Nicholas-Herman transformed into Olaf, the friendly snowman, from the movie Frozen, because he’s funny and cute, she said.

Hermione the smartest wizard from the Harry Potter books was represented by Sophia Forsyth.

“Her magic and her accent are cool,” Forsyth said.

Sophia Dun was sweet Sleeping Beauty and Anne Mafi selected Ana from Arendelle of Frozen as her character of choice.

“She is adventurous and very brave.”

Hirinaki Tau loves Moana.

“She is one of my favourite characters because she is a queen of her island.”

Donovan Kelly was in full costume and face paint as the ‘Joker’ from the popular Batman film,

“He (the Joker) is scary but I’m not afraid of him,” he said.

Tui Ponia wore a pink wig and was happy to pose as Virgo the maiden of the 12 Zodiac Celestial Spirits from the animated movie.

Literacy Week continues in the schools until Friday.
