Powerful cultural songs and chants boomed through the jam-packed Princess Anne Hall at Tereora College prefect induction on Friday.
The roaring applause from each of the schools Anau (house) accompanied by the vigorous beating of drums in support of the induction of their prefects, thundered through the college’s original great hall.
Parents heart were warmed, to see and feel the pride on the faces of the students as they sang songs and called out cheers.
Former students and chairperson of the colleges Parents and Teachers Association George George was impressed with the performances from the students.
“They went out of their way, with the touches of our culture, then the traditional way of welcoming ... they came out on top, they were brilliant,” George said.
Tereora College head boy Piritau Nga Junior was surprised and honoured to be elected.
His proud father Piritau, a former head boy of Titikaveka College, danced and chanted on stage when his son was announced the leader of the male prefects.
Piritau Junior felt the strong bond and connection to his father and was humbled to see him join the celebration on stage.
“It was a very special moment for me, to have a kind of family love that we can’t break.”
Head girl Adelaide Brown, daughter of Health minister Rose Toki-Brown, was shocked and felt privileged to be given the title.
“I’m very grateful and it’s such an honour for me to represent my school.”
Brown said leadership decisions does not come from her but the whole student body.
“I won’t make any decisions on my own, but will have discussions with the rest of the student leaders.”
