The floor of the National Auditorium was packed with smart schoolkids furrowing their brows, markers waving yellow cardboard signs above their heads, and scrutineers checking the results.

Around the outside, the seats were chocka with noisy classmates and teachers and parents.

But as the year 8 section of the Cook Islands mathematics quiz drew to its climax, the auditorium quietened. There were 19 schools competing – but with just seconds to go, the two teams from Avarua School were locked in first place.

The buzzer went – and the two reams, made up of friends and classmates, were tied on 50 points.

The section had to go to a tiebreaker – the quiz’s version of a football world cup penalty shootout.

The Apii Avarua year 8 pupils were all excited – but only one team could win. Their first team – Arthur Tekanene, Ketia Kiliuyi, Tofena Tome, Anzac Tapaitau – had competed valiantly.

But it was the school’s second team that got the answer first: Stanley Tutai, Raera Veiao, Maihanarei Short, Lily-ana Mataitini.

They were enormously proud. The whole event was “awesome”, they agreed.

Lily-ana said maths was one of her favourite subjects and she likes the different strands and topics involved.

In the other team, her classmate Tofena Tome Nikau said she loved maths, and enjoyed the annual quiz. “It’s fun bonding with the other kids.”

They had some role models there to look up to, as well. Tereora College’s Year 13 Calculus class were the markers and data entry teams on the night.

The quiz has involved teams from throughout the southern group, since 2004. Before that, it was just a Rarotonga competition.

An annual event, it is organised by the Rarotonga Mathematics Teachers Panel, specifically targeted for Year 6 through to Year 10 students.

Ministry of Education curriculum and pedagogy manager Strickland Upu said the purpose of the event is to continue to encourage the development of problem-solving skills.

It challenged students to cooperate in teamwork, he said.

It also helps develop standards of excellence in mathematics, increase awareness of mathematics in the community, and increase the appreciation of mathematics as an enjoyable and fun subject.

Teams from the Pa Enua of Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia and Mauke participated in the event.

A total of 19 schools were involved: Vaitau School, Araura Primary School, Tekaaroa Adventist School, Araura College, Enuamanu School, Mangaia School, Mauke School, Rutaki, Takitumu, Saint Josephs, Arorangi School, Avarua School, Apii Nikao, Apii Te Uki Ou, Imanuela Akatemia, Nukutere College, Papaaroa Adventist School, Tereora College, Titikaveka College.
