With the school holidays in full swing and the start of the New Year next week, most children on Rarotonga are spending the entire day at the beach cooling off from the heat.

Some, however, are helping out at the market and attending the family reunions that are always a feature of island life at this time of the year.

Noah Tuakeu, Isaac Makiteiaa and Mama Twin Tonitara, were at the Punanga Nui market yesterday helping their mum, Pativai Tonitara sell her rito crafts.

Tonitara said after the stall closed they would be heading straight for the beach. “The kids have been patient, but they’re enjoying the buzz of the market and they are behaving, so we can spend longer at the beach.”

At the Ngati Potoru-Aketaau and Ngavii family reunion based at St Joseph’s Primary school, some of the children including Elvin Charlie, Tehema Charlie, Maara Tangatakino, Adargio Manu - Henry and Amos Metcalf- Puruto took time out to pose for photographs.

The children said they were excited about the approach of a New Year, but their main concern was just simply getting to the beach and spending the day in the water.
