Apii Avarua’s 500 students dressed up as their favourite literary characters, filling the National Auditorium grounds with colour and laughter for their literacy week finale.

Visiting Indiana University school of education senior lecturer Leana McClain was at the school throughout the week giving lessons involving particular books.

She says for example, “In the junior school we looked at ‘The Three Little Pigs’ from the wolf’s viewpoint, and their legal rights, we looked at the evidence and investigated different perspectives.

“It can become very interesting and the children learn a lot that way.”

Princesses, super heroes, minions, caterpillars, historic characters, monsters and many more were dressed to perform in their classes, from the books they had been studying and many family members attended to cheer the characters along.
