Library fund donation great start for literacy week

In the lead-up to National Literacy Week which starts on Monday, Nukutere College has received a donation towards the purchase of new library books.

 

Garin College in Nelson, New Zealand raised the money for the donation during a promotion called “Geek Week”, with students dressing up as their favourite literacy characters.

Ministry of Education literacy teaching and learning advisor Jessica Le Bas, a former staff member of Garin College, was pleased to hand over a cheque on Friday for $620 to Nukutere principal Delany Yaqona.

“Garin have previously fundraised towards library books at Tereora College and we decided that now it was time for it to be shared around to a new school on the island.”

National Literacy Week starts on Monday with a variety of events and workshops scheduled for both staff and students on Rarotonga.

Meanwhile, International Literacy Day will be celebrated around the world on September 8 with the theme ‘Literacy and skills development’.

According to UNESCO, this year the day will integrated approaches that can support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s life and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies.
