Under the guidance of Anne Tierney from the Rarotonga Sailing Club (RSC), on Wednesday the students had a brief chat about the different parts of a yacht, as well as wind conditions, before they were let loose on the water.
Anne is both a coach with RSC and the technical director for Sailing Cook Islands.
With many of the students involved already having previous sailing experience, each boat had an experienced sailor alongside one inexperienced one, so they could share their knowledge
Anne said the experienced youngsters had been a real help so far this term.
“The older kids who are already RSC sailors have been really terrific in being able to help everyone get on the water straight away.
“I have been very impressed with the progress of the kids in the first couple of weeks and their enthusiasm to get out and try things.”
Anne says they are hoping to organise the Friday group to compete in a mini relay regatta at the end of the school term, and she says news of the event has already lifted the children’s competitiveness.
