Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI) is calling on potential students to register for a beauty, body and spa therapy course launching this month.

The course has internationally-recognised City and Guilds qualifications and has two levels two it.

CITTI director Caroline Medway-Smith said delivery of the programme will depend on the needs of their clients.

“We need to be able to run a programme that suits everyone. So we are looking at running the course three days a week, during the day.

“We may introduce an evening class as well, if there is a demand for it.”The course is gaining high interest from resort employees as well as others who desire this particular career or qualification.

Medway-Smith said the programme is a revamp from last year’s hairdressing course.

“We received feedback from resorts about the lack of local people training in beauty, massage and spa and a greater portion of expats were filling these positions.”

Establisment of the beauty, body and spa therapy course has attracted Australian trainer Suzanne Travers, who recently relocated to Rarotonga with her husband after hearing about the course.

Travers aims to build the skill set in beauty therapy among local people

“Jobs in hospitality and tourism have a market here, and I think beauty therapy is an area that has potential for growth.

“My desire is to enable local people to get the skills and qualifications to get work here in the spas.

“So I think it is an area that can really grow and develop.”

Travers says many tourists who come to Rarotonga want to experience a health and beauty spa

“If we can tap into that using the local healing methods and local products, it will be something people will want to experience,” she said.

The course is expected to begin after Easter Weekend, depending on the number of students enrolled.
