The school delayed their recognition of World Literacy Day because of their athletics event held on Thursday September 8.
International World Literacy Day aims to raise awareness of the need for increased accessibility to education and promotes the power of literacy within school and local communities.
The schools Year 4 and 5 students chose their favourite book character, poem, short story, song or musical artist as inspiration for their fancy dress.
Year 5 teacher James Keen said the idea was to get the students thinking about literacy and acknowledging the written word.
Students came to school dressed in costumes and then presented items to the class.
Some read their favourite poem or passage from a book, while others sang their favourite song.
“The students absolutely loved dressing up and some of them spent hours making their own costumes, which showed true dedication and effort,” Keen said.
The students practiced very hard to memorise their song lyrics and chosen story.
“It was fantastic to see such joy and enthusiasm for reading and some kids who are reluctant readers were fully engaged with this learning activity.”
Year 5 student Dallas Rongokea said his favourite part of Literacy Day was being able to make his costume with his dad.
“My costume was Cat in the Hat and I enjoyed learning how to make it. We also learned that reading can be fun,” Rongokea said.
Maya Postrzygacz said Literacy Day was a fun experience and she arrived dressed as “Puff the Magic Dragon.”
“My favourite part of my costume is my mask because my dad helped me make it.
“I made it out of paper and it is called polygon art. It took more than two hours to make and is made from 26 pieces of card,” Postrzygacz said.
The students learned that literacy is fun and that reading isn’t the only form of literacy.
