AVARUA School was filled with laughter and excitement on Thursday as the school welcomed the family of Edith Marita Hill Newmani, a former school teacher at the school.

The school’s principal Engia Baxter said Newmani worked at Avarua back in 1919, when Rarotonga was a much different place to what it is now.

She said the students were able to learn more about the school’s history during the short visit by Newmani’s family.

“Newmani’s children talked about what the school was and even showed old pictures of the school.”

“We were all fascinated by what they shared – especially our senior students who are writing something about the school’s history.”
