Te Aponga package of assistance – reduction of electricity costs by 100% for domestic users, and by 60% for businesses in Rarotonga, effective from the first metre reading from Thursday 19th March until June this year.
This extension will be extended to the island of Aitutaki, where 100% discounts will be offered for all electricity usage customers
Commercial customers’ tariffs, fees and user charges will be discounted 60 per cent; domestic customers will be discounted 100 per cent, for the next three months.
“We view the economic impacts on families and businesses as immediate, potentially severe and prolonged, at least over the forthcoming months,” the company said.
They had worked with the Cook Islands Investment Corporation, as the community faced significant economic hardship, to devise the short-term relief package. “We are fully aware the cash flow constraints of our customers is, and will be, the biggest issue during this time.
“We want to assure all our valued customers that as the key electricity provider to Rarotonga our business is expected to withstand and be resilient.”
The power company acknowledged there were many more questions to answer, and pleaded with customers to be patient while they set their new systems in place.
Te Aponga said they hoped the discounts would help businesses keep people employed, and helps households weather these difficult times.
