Report looks at new cable

Tuesday August 18, 2015 Written by Published in Economy

Finance Minister Mark Brown has released a report on the possibility of a new telecommunications cable between Rarotonga and French Polynesia.

Brown said Cook Islands connectivity to the world was an important aspect of improving future economic potential.

He said this improvement would come from providing services through government, and for people in the community to access a wide range of internet services.

The report is based on a feasibility study undertaken in 2013, before the actual introduction of the O3B service to the Cook Islands.

At that time, the study identified that the best route option for an ultra-high capacity international submarine cable system would be a direct cable from Rarotonga to Tahiti.

The capital cost was estimated at $US33.6 million or $NZ39.9 million.

Look out for a more in-depth story on the report in CI News this week.
